Now that it’s summer, travelers are once again heading to Greece. If you’re only in the capital city of Athens for a brief layover, put this one spot on your must-visit list: The Acropolis Museum. The Acropolis itself is an ancient complex of temples resting on a limestone hill above the city. But the Museum holds all the statues, engravings, and other interesting objects found in and amongst the temples. Walk through four sprawling floors, and you’ll find statues and busts of ancient gods, engravings of mythological scenes, and decorations from the temples themselves. In the topmost floor, the finds are displayed alongside a breathtaking view of the city. And there are not one, but two giftshops: one on the ground floor stocked with toys, jewelry, and souvenirs, and a bookshop filled with Greece-themed reading material on the top floor. And as if it couldn’t get any better, there’s even a café and restaurant serving up traditional Greek dishes. And on Friday evenings, the restaurant hosts live jazz nights. Stay a day or two more, maybe?
